Inawantji Jennifer Forbes was born in the bush around 1955. She grew up in the APY Lands and lives with her husband Sandy Ajax in Kalka. Inawanti travelled the area bewteen Amata and Pipalyatjara as a child, telling stories of camping with her mother while her father 'went back to find my aunty, who went the wrong way'. These journeys were made on foot and there was plenty of mai (food) and kapi (water) for the family to wait in camp while the aunty and her sons were found, and brought in to camp too. Inawantji is an adventurous painter, developing from her once singular bush trip depictions to her current rich patchwork imagery of rockholes, camps and the lines and stories between them.
